News flash - Results of 1st round on 19th May SBH Badminton Pentangular Challenge - NUSS 2nd position after 1st round

 Dear all,

News flash:  1st round kick off last evening (19th May 2012);  We started playing at about 6:45 pm and our last match ended at around 11:00 pm (yes, no mistake in my typing);

1)      Background:

NUSS was once again invited by Singapore Badminton Hall (SBH) to participate in Badminton Pentangular Challenge;  The other four (4) teams are:

1)      SBH

2)      Swift

3)      Team from China

4)      Team from Philippines

2)      Match format:  5 Doubles (Open) played over 4 rounds;  The five (5) doubles pairs were ranked accordingly and all the 1st ranked players from all the five (5) teams will play among each other in court 1;  This applies to 2nd ranked in court 2, 3rd ranked in court 3, and so on till 5th ranked;  To spice up the game and allow more players to play including "players might need to "retire" due to injury, each team is also allowed to play their substitutes (newly added after this evening kick-off meeting among Team Captains);

3)      In all, each doubles pairs would have to play 4 matches (2 games of 21 points; Handicap given to losing team in 1st set based on difference in score in 1st set, minus 2 divide by 2 and round down);  No rubber set;  A win is 3 points, draw 1 point and no point for loss;  At the end of each round, all the teams will be ranked according to points scored;  1st position team will be awarded 5 points, followed by 4 for 2nd, 3 for 3rd, 2 for 4th and 1 for 5th;

4)      At the end of each round, all the Team Captains will meet to discuss to review the performances of all teams;  In order not to have a runaway winner, the weaker team(s) will be given additional handicap if required by the stronger ones so that every team is a winner!  Sounds complicated?  Never mind… just go straight to the 1st round results;

5)      NUSS 1st round results (Win/Draw/L/Points):  Some of the games were very close with deuce….sorry I don't the full matches score details…

1st Doubles – Daniel/Sew Meng:  2/1/1/7 points

2nd Doubles – SK Gan/Jeremy: 3/1/0/10 points

3rd Doubles – Charles/Davis: 1/2/1/5 points

4th Doubles – Francis Tan/Michael: 2/1/1/7 points

5th Doubles – Alex/Ah Boon: 2/1/1/7 points

Total: 10/6/4/36 points (60% marks out of maximum 60)

6)      At the end of 1st round:

SBH: 37 points

NUSS: 36 points

PILIPINAS: 31 points

SWIFT: 17 points

SAT: 14 points

7)      Round 2 matches kicks off on Sunday, 8th July 2012, tentatively at about 3:00 pm (to be confirmed);  Please let me know if you are keen to come and support us in person;  I have attached the road map to SBH for your convenience in case you want to surprise us!

With Best Regards/Francis

Thank you for your support for the 2012 - ISG cum S&R Night & looking forward to your continued support for 2013 ISG!

Dear ALL,

1) I would like to share some of the magical moments of 2012 ISG;

2) Bowling – Our Badminton “A” team emerged Champion with a total score of 1,909 points;  2nd was Golf with 1,895 points followed by Secretariat at 1,771 points;  Our “B” team also did us proud to come in at 8th position with 1,590 points;

3) Table Tennis – Our Badminton “A” team emerged Champion after straight games victories over Teams from Squash Section (heats), Billiards (quarterfinals), semis over Soccer (given a very favourable draw – Straight away enter into semi-finals) and Golf (2-1) in the finals;  Our “B” team defeats in the heats was by Golf whom our “A” team exacted “revenge” in the finals;

4) Badminton – There were No takers from other Section Members except two (2) Tennis players;  Last year, some found out that badminton was too strenuous and punishing for them because no one wants to kill the shuttle (including our badminton players) resulting non-badminton players panting for their breadth!

5) Darts & Balut – We fielded one team each and did incredibly well too;

6) S & R Night – We filled up one full table and two of our Members sportingly participated in the evening program;  Ang SC our Hokkien football commentator for a Malaysia Cup match and Yee Fong trying to put 5 wedding rings and 5 watches all in one hand;  Kudos to Ang SC eldest son who participated in the football juggler demonstration and Martin’s wife, Theresa also giving another football commentary in English;

7) Other highlights – Prizes were given away for the winners for the various games;  Table Tennis was awarded Sports Section of the Year;  There was also a talk on “Chiropractic and Sports” – See attached material;  The other wholesome program is football jugglers in action which is a refreshing change.

On behalf of the Sub-Committee, I want to express our appreciation to all our participants and supporters (at the sports ground or at home cheering us on);

Cheers!
Francis Tan
